Music Creation – The Creative Way of Learning Piano.

After the concert “Music Creation” on May 21, 2022, at Grace Church of Evergreen, San Jose, CA

For the Spring Recital 2022 Sasha’s Studio has taken a new approach, which suggested that all performers may present themselves as creators and authors of their own musical expressions. Thus, for the event “Music Creation” all students have created their own compositions in addition to performing a few pieces from the standard repertoire. For some of them it is a new experience in music making and expressing themselves as creators. Other students have already created and performed their pieces in the past, for example Ashna Munavalli’s composition “Gentle Rain, Story of Water” is her a third original work.
Students have taken a variety of approaches when creating their own sound on piano.

CREATIVE PROCESS

Many used elements of nature as a source of inspiration. Students enjoyed themselves, playing with sound and recreating impressions from the nature, such as rain, storm, river, moonlight, rock slide, etc. and translating these impressions and emotions into patterns of piano texture. Some students preferred to start with a simple melodic phrase or a piano texture element, such as a chord, or arpeggio or Alberti bass figure – to invite imagination and then to start telling their own story. Many of the students have used standard ternary and binary forms to organize their musical ideas into a coherent composition. Students engaged in exploration of different types of contrasts in musical expression and observing the ways in which human emotions may be translated into variety of contrasting colors, textures, and dynamic shapes.
Many of the students have included improvisatory sections in their performances, that allowed them to use certain melodic, rhythmic and harmonic patterns as a starting point for the unfoldment of their musical ideas and emotions, that express in the moment of play, guided by the flow of inspiration.
Most of the students have completed the notation of their music in the powerful music software Musescore, which allowed them to create professionally looking scores, ready for publication.
All students have given a short spoken spoken introduction, introducing themselves, and announcing their program. A special emphasis in their presentation was given to their original works, and the skills they have learned through the process of creation.
